Trinidad and Tobago Maymester
Agriculture and Culture in the Caribbean
May 11-June 5, 2015
This Maymester course (4 weeks) will give students the opportunity to explore issues related to agriculture, social systems, and culture within a Caribbean island. In this course, students will examine the role of colonialism, cultural history and social policy in influencing the prevailing societal issues in Trinidad and Tobago and explore various agency programs, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and indigenous projects that are actively responding to the region’s major social service needs.
May 11- 15 and June 1-5-- Course begins in State College (2 weeks)
During this time we will meet as a class (face to face and online). Students will be assigned readings to gain a better understanding of the culture and context of the Caribbean, and more specifically Trinidad and work on a group project that they will focus on while in-country. Students will be able to select a topic/area that fits within their major or minor to ensure that they are working on an area which they have an interest and are able to use their expertise, knowledge, and skills. More information about the group research project will be discussed in class.
